Auf Wiedersehen Pet Series 1

In 1983, a TV show was shown on ITV, that could have been a huge hit or a ratings disaster. Thankfully for all involved, Auf Wiedersehen Pet was a huge hit for viewers and critics alike.

The UK in the late 1970's and early 1980's was a place of national strikes and huge unemployment, especially in places such as the North East. Franc Roddam the creator of the show, came up with the idea, when on returning to his home town of Norton, Stockton on Tees, found that many of his friends in the construction trade had gone to work in Germany.

Franc Roddam created the series, and worked with the brilliant writing team of Ian la Frenais and Dick Clement, who had also written for shows such as The Likely Lads and Porridge. Six episodes were written, and then the rest of the series was written around the characters, as we watched them fall in and out of love, get into fights and also find some of them back in the UK unexpectedly.

The series was a huge success, and not only down to the great writing and superb performances of the cast. The series made huge names out of Jimmy Nail, Tim Spall, Tim Healy, Kevin Whately, Pat Roach and Gary Holton.

Viewers were drawn to the reality of what they were seeing on screen, and because of what was happening at that time in the UK, it was almost like watching a documentary for many people. The series struck a chord, and still does almost 30 years on from when it was first shown on British TV.

The series revolved around a group of seven men. Four bricklayers, a carpenter, a plasterer and an electrician. The timing of the show was perfect, and to think that this type of show would be such a hit in this modern world we live in, probably not.

The series was shown on ITV from the 11th of November 1983, through to the 10th of February 1984. Viewing figures for the first series were an average of 10 million, but this would almost double for the second series when that was aired in 1986.

There were many comparisons made to this first series, with many commenting on how it was very much like watching a WW2 film, as the lads all lived in a blue wooden hut on site. This was what made the series real and gritty, and the writers and creator knew how to connect with the British public at a time when there was nothing to look forward to, except rising unemployment figures.

American Idol: The Spotlight on the Judges

It was just over a decade ago where we saw the landscape of television change due to the success of the hit tv show, American Idol. The show managed to produce a fair share of talents in every season that kept viewers wanting to see more. Aside from the talent that was showcased, the viewing public also got exposed to three different personalities standing as a judge for the show. Randy Jackson, a well-known producer in the music business, Paula Abdul, a popular singer/dancer and probably the most memorable of them all, Simon Cowell, a music producer from the UK who handled the careers of several musicians and was known for his straightforward opinions which means contestants usually receive harsh criticisms from him without feeling remorse.

The relationship between the judges also became one of the reasons why people tuned in to the show. Paula and Simon's nonstop bickering turned out to be a form of entertainment for most people. However, that trio was not meant to last long as the judges had a change of line-up in the latter years of the show. We've seen the judging panel grow to four when comedian Ellen DeGeneres joined the panel. Some have criticized her for not having enough experience as a judge and for not having enough music credentials. She later left the show after one season. We also saw Kara DioGuardi, a music producer and song writer, join the show. The major turning point of the show would have to be the time when Simon decided to leave the show. Many thought that the show will not continue without his presence but the concern that was in everybody's heads was the question of who was going to replace him. Several names popped up until we saw the entire shake-up in the judging panel.

They were cutting the judges back down to three like how it used to be with Randy Jackson being the only original judge to be retained. It was later announced that he was going to be joined by famous rock star and lead singer of the band, Aerosmith, Steven Tyler and popular singer/dancer/actress Jennifer Lopez. There were mixed reactions regarding the new panel of judges but in the end, the three of them did their best to have some chemistry between each other, much to the delight of the fans. But while some were pleased with the decision, some thought that the three of them were too nice to the contestants and they fail to give enough constructive criticisms like Simon Cowell used to do.

It has now been a problem for talent competitions to be criticized for their selection of judges and not just contestants. Some criticizes them for getting judges only for high ratings instead of producing a good talent molded by a credible set of judges. For a show like American Idol, they have endured these criticisms for more than a decade and it doesn't seem to affect them as they have clearly gained a loyal fan base whoever they put on the judging panel.

Adaptation Decay

When a franchise reaches a certain level of popularity, it has become a noticeable trend to adapt written works, comic books and even video games into Hollywood Pictures. This practice has become prevalent in a number of recent motion pictures: Harry Potter, Twilight, The Hunger Games, the numerous superhero movies, Transformers and games like Resident Evil and Tekken. While seeing these materials in motion is definitely a big draw of a film adaption, there is often one thing that long time fans of a franchise end up looking at when these movies finally come out: How faithful the movie is to the source material.

For fans, it often does not matter how pretty the effects are or how famous the cast and production crew are, the film is rendered pointless if nothing resembles the original. Books seem to get off the easiest in this department, as at worst content is omitted due to the fact they need to compress a large amount of content into a relatively small time frame by comparison. It is the same with comics, though they are spared because an issue is often a self-contained story and does not reach the length of a novel, though skipping through big events is still a problem present in these...

Other franchises are not as lucky however. Video games seem to lose the most when they are ported from the home consoles to the big screen. Starting with the concept with something as simple as a fighting game it was a wonder how so much was changed in regards to Tekken. The characters were not recognizable beyond their names and most of the fighting styles were not even similar, and this is taking into account the transition from video game design to real life. Resident Evil is another game series that falls short in the film adaption department, whose story has absolutely nothing to do with the games beyond there are zombies in them.

Children's franchises also take a hit here, with Transformers and Avatar the Last Air Bender also receiving a number of negative criticisms in regards to how faithful they were to the original concepts. Admittedly while Micheal Bay's Transformers is its own universe, it does not really make people think of the classics beyond wondering what happened to them and why they are like this in his version. Avatar on the other hand just has a number of problems utilizing the original's content and is once more not recognizable by fans beyond their names.

While it is not true to say all adaptations of different media are bad, they suffer a lot in the transition and makes people question whether it was really worth it in the end. Further there are times when the creator is not even consulted for such and thus the distance between the adaptation and the original becomes even further. There is no real line to be drawn at what can and cannot be done in a movie, which is what makes these creative liberties happen.

An American civil war is going on and suddenly there is an outburst of the zombies and the president has to save the nation from these very dangerous undead creatures.

Plot

The very first scene of the movie is that Abraham Lincoln, a 10 year old lad is watching his father commit suicide because there has been an outbreak of the undead creatures and his father could not handle the situation.Abraham then joins the others in his community to protect the country and get rid of the zombies. This is just a small outbreak of the zombies and the people along with Abraham manage to destroy them all and save the country from further crisis.

The story is then fast forwarded to where Abraham Lincoln is the president and is informed of an outbreak of the undead in a place which is across the enemy lines. In his early days he had seen his parents succumb to these undead creatures, and has an idea what to expect and how to tackle them. He immediately gives orders to the army to go and destroy these furious undead creatures before it's too late.
This is what the Abraham Lincoln movie is all about. The bigger question is that will he be able to survive the siege and bring peace to the country and will he succeed in killing the zombies or will become a prey for them?

Reception

The Abraham Lincoln movie has been made with a nominal budget of $150,000. The film being distributed by The Asylum was released on 29th May, 2012. This is the best Lincoln movie so far. The studio has made similar kind of movies previously also, but this film has raised the bar.

Review

The Asylum is back again with a 90 minutes Abraham Lincoln movie, the so called 'mockbuster'. The last half dozen Asylum films were quite bad and were disastrous at the box office too. The latest Abraham Lincoln movie vs. the Zombies will save and bring back the reputation of the Asylum as it is one of the best Asylum movies so far. We have all seen the previous Lincoln movies and have been disappointed a lot of times but with the release of Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies your opinion towards Asylum movies will change forever.

The movie looks fantastic and the sound effects are amazing. Director Richard Schenkman has done a great job and everyone has acted quite well. For the first time there are some recognizable actors in the film.
Conclusion - If you like the zombie films and can tolerate gore then you will definitely love this one.

A Movie - A Criticism of Bruce Conner's 1956 Short

'A Movie' is an anti-film and its aim is to generate an emotional mood and an intellectual response among its audience members - the title itself is upside down in one frame, as if it is telling the audience how different the experience is going to be. Some expressions I would use are: 'amazed', 'awed', 'shaken', 'curious', 'involved', 'challenged'. Take the last expression, for instance. What is so challenging about 'A Movie'? It runs for not more than twelve minutes, looks very dated and is mostly prepared out of ready-made footage through the simple process of splicing. Its opening credits don't bother to exclude info meant for the projectionist, and most of the time one feels as if Bruce Conners the director was suffering from some mental disorder, because he kept inserting 'The End' and 'A Movie' repeatedly in the course of the film. One uses the word challenged when faced with some material that manages to alter or re-inspect his/her perception, and it generally is kept for material that knows what it is doing. Bruce Conners' first attempt, however schizophrenic, certainly knows what it is doing, and that is simply why it matters.

I think whenever you are spoon-fed with data especially in documentaries, you don't really think much about it after the end credits. Informative data is more for students interested in the subject - Al Gore's documentary will have more environmentalists in the audience, and Lisa Simpson... What casts a deeper imprint are works that lead you along a path, but do not reveal everything to you, and 'A Movie' does this. Facts are not what the film bombards you with, but rather visuals that bring within you some form of reaction. You may be baffled, amazed, repulsed, confused etc but you have a reaction, and you dig deeper to know what really caused that reaction. I shall dissect 'A Movie' in order to let you know why I experienced the aforementioned expressions.

The film starts with the title and the year of release. The title itself raises some curiosity as to what the movie is about. Then comes the director's name BRUCE CONNERS in a font size that almost takes up the entire frame. In the background is music apt for epic films. We soon realize that the director's name is to be reckoned with since it takes a very long time to clear the screen. Why the delay? I thought it was to stress that the film is a one-man effort and therefore we had to assume he was the editor, producer, sound mixer etc. After that vanishes, we get bizarre visuals that are generally seen by the projectionist and would've been kept out in any other film. Why keep that? Maybe to say this will not look like a well polished film. We also see, in blurry font 'End of Part Four', after which begins the countdown from twelve to four, interrupted by a shot of a woman undressing, and then finishing the countdown and then saying 'THE END'! I felt the director wanted to say "Please, don't see any further. I've given you what you came for! After this there's very little that's entertaining!"

The movie begins with horses galloping, either ridden by Indians or cowboys or carriage driven. The animals are moving at a fast pace with cinematic music in the background. I thought this was to say how different men have been using same animal in similar ways as a locomotive down the years - first the Indians, then cowboys and then people inside carriages. The next shot is of a rampaging elephant from behind, and later come four wheeled vehicles, mostly cars that race dangerously. The horse and the elephant have four legs and the car has four tires, and all run on land - so we keep this thread in mind. Slowly come the crashes that are accompanied by slightly forewarning sounds in the background. The last crash is the worst, and we see 'THE END' again, maybe to say that 'this seems like the end but it isn't'.

The third segment is longer, starting with Polynesian women carrying huge things on their heads, then tightrope walkers balancing dangerously. There's something falling from the sky but I couldn't make out what it was. After this, there's the puzzling moment where a naval soldier seems to view a bikini-clad girl through the periscope in the submarine and he signals to blow her up, creating a sexual pun according to many viewers. Maybe also to address violence against women, but that seems unlikely. There are shots of miniature cycles and scooters, plus shots of two-wheeler vehicles racing. The music is serious and low throughout. Segment four may clear some of the confusions risen. It consists of shots of African tribes starving in some shots and killing an elephant in another, lots many crashes and accidents, natural disasters, and terrible moments of dead bodies on display. By now you've seen man destroying himself using almost everything he has, and he isn't even bothered by killing the same animals he used as locomotive before. Questions arising: 'Are we to take this just as a movie?' and 'When will this end?''.

Finally, the scuba diving scene without any end credits. I immediately thought of the lost city of Atlantis. The destructive man may have no choice but to find a solution below. The film itself wants us to dig deeper, and find out what started all this and what can be done now. It may also allude to getting 'pearls' only after getting deeper - probably to say we should watch the film again to get closer to its implicit messages. This is why I used the word 'challenged'.

3 Latest Movies Filmed on Location in South Africa

South Africa has been a prime location for film productions for years now, but it is still a novelty to find an international movie or major TV series actually set on the streets of Cape Town or Johannesburg. So it was with great excitement that South African movie goers greeted the release of Safe House earlier this year, and that is not the only movie to be filmed on location in Cape Town recently.

Safe House - This blockbuster box office hit stars Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds and was filmed on location in and around Cape Town. The story of a young CIA agent on the run as he tries to look after a fugitive in a safe house gives lots of scope to the Mother City as a setting. Capetonians get extra thrills from location spotting of their familiar streets and mountain, but from the fact that it scored a huge $40.2 m in its first weekend after release it went down a storm everywhere else in the world too.

Chronicle - Here Cape Town is doubling for Seattle, as three teenagers with supernatural powers find their lives spiralling out of control. The sci-fi thriller is filmed as if it were found-footage put together from video recordings. As well as being filmed on location in the streets of Cape Town, the production used sets constructed on a film studio stage at Cape Town Film Studios. Left hand drive cars were shipped in especially for the production and ingenious special effects produced to show the effects of the heroes' telekinetic powers crushing a car.

Dark Tide is another 2012 release filmed on location in and around Cape Town. This harnesses the power and drama of the ocean as Halle Berry stars as a diving instructor who returns to work in deep waters after an almost fatal encounter with a shark. The crew shot on a small boat with real great white sharks in False Bay. The studio filming in an underwater tank was completed at Pinewood Studios in the UK. The film was released in March 2012 and didn't get very good critical reviews, either for the plot or for the acting, but everyone agrees that the scenery is stunning, as you would expect for any movie filmed with the Cape Peninsula as a backdrop.

And something else to watch out for, though not yet released, is the third TV series of military drama Strike Back, which was filmed in various locations in South Africa earlier this year.

Prinz Productions offers premier stills and film production services based in Cape Town, South Africa. Specialising in South Africa, Portugal and Mauritius, they also offer production services worldwide. Find out more about their film production service in South Africa.

Glossary - New Features Explained

Wi-Di- In times gone by, to duplicate your PC screen onto your TV the only way to do this was via a RGB or HDMI cable. Wi-Di, or "Wireless Display" allows PC's or tablets with compatible Wi-Di technology to stream an exact duplicate of the screen to your TV without any wired connection.

Magic Remote Voice- Last year's LG's Magic Motion Remote allowed you to navigate its Smart TVs like a Wii - this year's remote improves with a scrollable click wheel and some new voice recognition functionality. The microphone in the remote sends your voice to your Smart TV, which converts it to text - making things easier than typing character-by-character while you wave your arm around in the air.

MHL - stands for Mobile HD Link, allows the connection of mobile devices such as phones and tablets via a Micro HDMI cable.

2nd display - is basically the opposite of Wi-Di - ie. Streaming TV back to your Smartphone or Tablet via Wi-Fi.

Smart Share Plus- Smart share plus is available on LM9600 and LM8600, and incorporates the two features of MHL and 2nd Display, as well as the Network file browser and Wi-Di available on the regular Smart Share enabled TVs.

Dual Play- LG TVs with Dual play transmit two separate 2D images that can be seen through two different set sets of polarized glasses. So when two players wear the glasses while playing games, they will each see a different image covering the entire screen.

Nano Full LED- A full array of LED backlights, with a thin film of minuscule dots in front, which disperse light evenly and effectively creating a more defined and dynamic contrast.

Aspirations Do Come True - Preview of Aayna Ka Bayna - The Dance Film

It reminds me of an old adage by the Novelist Charles Wilson, "No matter the size of the bottle, the cream always rises to the top." Talent stands out. It gets you noticed. But, talent serves only as starting point in one's endeavor. One also needs to have a strong will power and perseverance to chase one's dream. One has to keep working and capitalize on the talent they are blessed with.

Akshara Films Division's forthcoming release a new Marathi film titled, "Aayna Ka Bayna" - The Dance Film in association with Rikky and Ronie Entertainment and Media Pvt Ltd presentation produced by Manju Paras Porwal, Amar Kakkad and Pushpa Kakkad is one such initiative where in the director Samit Kakkad has been instrumental in identifying the talent of Rohan and Group who have won Boogie Woogie, a popular dance show for five times in a row. What intrigues me is the fact what inspired these teenagers to go that extra mile and set them apart from the rest of the pack with sparkling difference.

Samit Kakkad's brush with Marathi Cinema goes with his earlier release "Huppa Huiya" wherein he was the creative director and producer for the film. For the first time the legacy of showing lavani and item songs in Marathi movie would be replaced with hip-hop, Western and other forms of contemporary dance admits Samit.

Under the stewardship of a filmmaker Rohan and Group got the coveted platform to showcase their talent which many only aspire to achieve it in their lifetime. The group was selected from an audition that was attended from across Maharashtra by over 400 dancers. Today, this group from Nalasopara have become role models for many who aspire to be good dancers thereby making Nalasopara turn into Mini New York, a place where hip hop dance form is widely popular. The dance film proves to the masses that Yes, aspirations do come true if you believe in your talent and chase your dreams in your chosen craft.

180 Degree Rule - Cinematography Basics

In order for the audience watching a movie to understand the relationship of characters and significant things within a scene the movie needs to be filmed from a consistent point of view. The 180 rule helps the director preserve that consistency in the minds of the audience. If you were to draw an imaginary line through the film set then all filming must be done from one side of that line, or axis. That, in a nutshell, is the 180 degree rule.

When the audience is seeing a scene of a guy on the left talking to a lady on the right they might be confused if the scene is filmed so the close-ups of both the man and woman seem to be looking in the same direction. If at any time the camera is moved to the reverse side of the axis for one or more shots in a scene the audience will probably be confused and imagine the characters suddenly turned around or jumped to a different place in the scene.

Action and particularly chase sequence scenes particularly need to have the 180 degrees rule followed. Moving from one side of the axis to the other creates an illusion in the minds of the audience that the chase has abruptly changed direction.

When the camera moves across the axis it is referred to as jumping the line or crossing the line. In reality such a change in viewpoint at some point in a chase sequence would only be fitting in a comedy.

When a scene is being filmed it is usual to do different shots of the characters performing the scene all the way from a wide version that includes everything down to close-ups of single actors. This procedure is known as coverage. Retaining the 180 degree rule is very important when shooting coverage so the editor can put the elements together in a way that makes sense.

Creatively Breaking the 180 degrees rule

Some directors might deliberately break the 180 degree rule for a special reason such as to produce disorientation in the audience's mind. You may see this during battle sequences or a dance number. If the action takes the participants round a turn after that it can seem logical to the audience that action is moving in a another direction.

If actors are moving about during the action of a scene much attention needs to be used to maintain the apparent physical correlation of the actors to each other and to the set elements. If the scene is done as all close-ups it will be extremely confusing as to what is going on. An occasional wide, establishing shot can remove the misunderstanding.

Albino Farm (2009)

Albino Farm is a 2009 horror film distributed by Anxiety Island Entertainment. It stars Tammin Sursok as Stacey, Sunkrish Bala as Sanjay, Nick Richey as Brian, and Alicia Lagano as Melody. It is written and directed by Joe Anderson and Sean McEwen.

Four friends are working on a history report. They are on the road in search of rural American legends. After get a flat tire, they come upon a small gas station with a blind man in front. He mentions a local legend, but gives very little details. Farther on, they catch site of a large white tent in which a revival is taking place. One of the locals urges them to join but they decline and come upon the small town of Shiloh. After stopping for dinner, they ask around about the Albino Farm that is rumored to be nearby. But they soon discover that there are certain things that are better left unexplored.

It always peaks my interest when a movie is made based on an actual religious scripture. It somehow makes the story more real. In Albino Farm, the scripture is from Leviticus 21:16 which basically says that no person with a physical deformity shall approach the altar of the Lord. This explains why those deformed people were locked away at the Albino Farm. But this also presents a huge hole in the storyline. Everyone in the town of Shiloh had some sort of deformity, which begs the question "Why weren't they locked away at the farm with the others?" We are left to assume that those living in the town and at the revival were ones who chose salvation over being locked away with the "damned souls" at the Albino Farm.

In addition to being based on the scripture, Albino Farm also has a particular scene that truly makes it seem real. The scene where Stacey and Sanjay wake up with their arms sewn together. When I saw that, I could almost feel how painful that would have been. The worst part of that was when they finally ripped them apart. I could barely watch that.

To wrap, if you are looking for a somewhat realistic "redneck" slasher flick, then Albino Farm is definitely up your alley!
